Mothballs in cedar!?

I have a wonderful old cedar chest that I cannot use because the previous owner put mothballs in it. I have not been able to remove/reduce the odor of the mothballs and it is so strong that anything stored in it smells like mothballs forever. Any ideas how to get rid of the mothball odor?
