Thanks for the advice. As I mentioned, the legs do have seams and the wood pieces in the legs are cut in different directions causing a wide variety of grain directions and patterns on each leg.
I took both your advice and last night used the thinner to rub down the wood. The top looks great with the red mahogany tint of the wood now showing through. The legs look dull and bleached and appear old and weathered. However, that may be good. With some rubbing of fine steal wool and gloss tung oil, the table will probably look like a well kept antique. Anyway it should look better than before with the several old coats of bubbled and pealing varnish when I found it.
I'll decide later if to continue and try to sand the legs back to wood.
