I wouldn't suggest ever using butter...the fats will go rancid and smell to high heaven..I would suggest washing it with a warm water 10%liquid dish soap solution and hand drying. Then after it dries thoroughly,run your hands over the wood. If it's rough to the touch sand it down carefully with really fine paper like 220-320 till smooth... you could put a couple of coats of oil finish like Watco on it in just a natural(no color), with a natural bristle brush, soaking it well, waiting 15 mins and carefully wiping it off, and after that dries thoroughly (12-24 hours per coat), a coat of butchers wax...or you could just paste wax and buff for a lower sheen and more natural look. Just leave all the cracks and signs of use, making sure there are no ovious splinters,etc....I always tell people to pretend they're blind and finish with their hands...feel the whole surface and only fix whats sharp or rough to the touch..best of luck
