As Gregg said, old varnish or lacquer for that matter turn into a sludge when hit with stripper. DO NOT try and scrub this with steel wool! (Sorry Gregg) Scrape off the sludge first with a putty knife or scrapper. THEN put on a light coat of stripper, and scrub. I usually clean up with lacquer thinner and scrub with a Scotchbrite pad. I'm sure this is what Gregg meant, but if you try and scrub stripper off you will go through a steel wool pad every few seconds! You might get lucky though and have a newer finish which oftentimes comes off semi-dry in sheets. I love it when I get that.......much cleaner a job.
