I just bought an old sideboard that looks like it was re-varnished with a very dark varnish in the 1950's. From looking inside the sideboard I could tell that the original wood is much lighter with a fine grain. What is the best way to remove the varnish so as to best protect the wood? I tried sanding back the varnish with steel wool but it is taking ages! Is paint stripper bad for old pieces? If you use paint stripper should you clean it off the wood afterwards? HELP!
