Hello James,
Your response peaked my curiosity - so I looked even closer - and it seems there are multiple layers of paint (or perhaps a primer & paint...???) - underneath the layers, there is clearly a dark wood - even the framing & blocks that were installed appear (to my untrained eye) to be cherry...???
The people we bought it from are sure it was painted (over the original cherry wood-grain finish by their great uncle) in the 60's and that it was originally bought by their great great grandmother somewhere AROUND 1920...???
I have added a few more photos to the web address provided (and again below), including a stamp (appears to be ink) on the BACK of the china cabinet portion - the ONLY markings I can find...???
