As you can see, the chipped paint will tell you that the wood that is under the paint is most likely not cherry and has probably been painted since new. The age is from the 60's and is the designer look that was intended. The wood that is not finished will likely reveal a poplar, alder, maple wood, or all in some combination, beneath the paint. The better choice would be to clean the old paint, light sand and repaint the same color as previous, as you do have a quaint set that may be best left as was.
