Preserving and finishing a very old piece.

I have a 5 foot natural staff (branch) that has a top naturally deformed by a vine. It is perfect for a walking staff. Unfortunately, it has been in the woods many years and has some longitudinal cracks and the top is very aged, although not falling apart. Would like to fill the cracks and seal/finish it for a grand son. It is really unbelievable and worth saving Any suggestions for preserving very old wood
