I don't think you're doing anything wrong....the Naptha is just doing it's job and cleaning REALLY well....stripping the wax as well as all the dirt and grime from the finish. As far as tobacco, the tar and nicotine will actually attack the finish and cause it to get rough and crazed, and very dry looking,another good reason for cleaning it off a piece of furniture, thoroughly. My guess is you're picking it for the tough cleaning jobs, and that's the result you should expect when the surface is really clean.
