Restore brass barometer dial bezel

I have a banjo type barometer that's about 125 years old. The brass bezel mounted to the wood and holding the glass over the barometer dial is dark, pitted, almost rusty looking and in need of restoration. How do I get started to remove the years of oxidation, then polish to nice and bright? I can't be the first person to have this delema. Many thanks!
