In Response To: repair soft finish? (marilyn)

I don't know of any situation where pledge has softned a urithane finish. The effect of age on urethane will be the out gas of chemicles to the point where it will not hold up any longer, becoming yellowed and brittle and start to crack in a fine pattern. What is happening here is a mystery to me, but a polish should not cause a softening effect in this case. There must be some other effect we are not aware of or you don't have a poly finish, and that is my guess for you. Locate an out of the way spot where you can try some lacquer thinner on a q-tip rotate the lacquer dampened Q-Tip on the finish for a few minutes and see if the finish starts to disolve, if so then you don't have poly and we can talk more about the finish after that has been determined. As for doing this in the dining room well that may be a situation that only you can answer, it would not be my first choice.
