Hmmmm..your definition of veneer is entirely correct..interesting, what you're describing does sound like a grain painting technique, the brick color being the "underpainting" or base coat on which the darker grain strokes were painted. The red tint may be remnants of an analine stain that was common back then. Pictures would definately be great...if it is in fact what we're talking about, then reproducing this again will be quite a challenge.
