Sounds to me like he tried to put the Varathane stain on too thick..a comon mistake when dealing with a dark wood finish....the Minwax is really a stain,too...it will seal..as most stains do...to a point, but really should be topcoated with a finish in most cases. The Varathane sounds like the problem, although I'm not familiar with their products other than the enamels. I believe you will have to remove the stains and start anew...try to take a rag wet with mineral spirits or turpentine and see if that removes the stain coats...make sure to wash all of it off as best you can and dry the areas...then let the piece dry thoroughly...in a warm place and check to see that the surface is no longer sticky. Let us know what happens
