You are right, it may never dry completely or before the child can make proper use of the chair. I do believe that you may need to start over as the stains and finishes must be used steperately and drying times must be followed exactly. Some stains take quite a while to dry relative to starting with the chosen finish. You should make sure that the temp. is over 65 degrees F., and that all stripper is nutralized with a lacquer thinner or semilar rinse. There is a remote chance that a spray finish, with all it's entense drying agents, will help establish a safe foundation for a final coat to harden properly. So you could consider trying this before strippinf. I have saved a few poly messes that have come in here in this way. Be sure if this should work, to test the final coat on a small out of sight location before slapping on another coat of what ever, to be safe about it, and wait till it has dried to your satisfaction before laying on the last coat. Finally, go to a GOOD dealer, with real knowlege of their products (local refinshers will know this guy) and ask for a list of compatable products, and follow their intructions to the letter, until you have a comfort zone with the process.
