Hi Kathy, sorry to hear about you conundrum regarding the dining room set. it sounds as if the buffet is mahagony..usually the door and drawer fronts are veneered with figured veneers and the sides and top of the carcase is a plainer flat sawn mahagony....the veneers tend to be redder and retain that redness better than the flatsawn stock, but the sun can wreak havoc on mahagonies and change them all sorts of browns, oranges and yellows. Am I right in assuming that the person who tried to match the drawer ...didn't? It sounds like you have a genuine beef with them if you weren't happy with their work....typically, if it's the type of thing I think it is, the finish would have been lacquer, and possibly a toned lacquer too.....where they actually add color to the lacquers to help blend the overall wood tones of the piece and give it a more uniform appearance. This type of finish changes as it ages too, so matching it exactly with a brand new finish can be really tough...I would love to see some pictures of the two pieces if possible...I'm sure there is someone in your area who can do satisfactory work like this....
