This type of caning is referred to as "machine cane"....the caning is bought in a roll and cut to the size and shape of the seat plus 1/4-3/8" and then it is glued, and wedged in place with hide glue and a tapered reed called a spline. The caning should be soaked first to swell it so that after installation it will dry taut. As far as getting the old spline and glue out of the groove, it hopefully was installed with hide glue and you can use a warm vinegar and water solution to soften the spline remnants and then using a narrow chisel you can carefully dig it out. It's a tricky job to do if you've never attempted it...but there are resources aplenty for materials and instruction.....this website should have all you'll need to get started...www.hhperkins.com Many craft centers have classes on caning that cover the techniques as well..it also helps date the chair as machine caning was developed right around the turn of the century I believe...
