Finish Depression Era Dining Room Set

I have a depression era dining room set that was a family item given to me. The china cabinet is in excellent condition just needs cleaning. The buffet was badly scratched and had to be refinished. I started refinishing and realilzed I would not be able to put the same type of finish on the buffet as the china cabinet. The original finish appeared to be a faux mahogany on the front doors, drawers, and buffet top however the sides seemed to be a walnut finish. The base coat was a burnt orange then I think there was some type of lacquer finish on the buffet. I took the drawer from the china cabinet so that the finish could be matched. I had someone else finish it for me and now I wish I would have done it myself. The person finished with what looks like a dark walnut and put a polyurethane finish on it. I still have a table and chairs that need to be done as well but I don't want it finished like the buffet. I am contemplating refinishing the buffet to see if I can more closely match the china cabinet and the dining room table/chairs once I tackle that project. I realize the value is diminished from the buffet so I don't think there is a problem refinishing again. What I would like to know is there somewhere that I could find some information on the type of original finish and instructions on how to refinish this buffet again or a reputable person in the Atlanta, GA area that could help? Any suggestions would be great.
