advice needed on cedar

Time for me to ask some advice for a change. This year marks my 35th anniversary of the last time I finished cedar, and as I am a senior citizen now I need a refresher. The last cedar I did came out great but I'm sure it was one of the first pieces I ever did. God looks out for fools and drunks---I'm sure He was looking out for me then.

I have a cedar chest the customer wants to turn into a coffee table. It is solid cedar with walnut veneer everywhere but the back. Like normal on a back, the wood was not well surfaced from the factory but I hogged out he imperfections with a belt sander (a tool I almost never use in refinishing). Besides gumming up the paper it came out pretty good after sanding. I'm not EVEN planning on trying to stain the back. I read somewhere that finishing cedar presents its own set of problems.

My plan as of now is to wipe the back down with alchohol to take care of the oil, then put a coat of clear shellac over the whole piece as a sealer. I plan on following up with several coats of poly. I would prefer lacquer as it is a really pretty piece but the customer requested poly because of two kids and two dogs. Probably a good choice. Will my plan of action work or would you guys suggest a different approach? I'm worried the oils in the wood will affect the finish. As you know I'm a beliver in using shellac as a sealer but this time I'm not sure.
