Boy this is a loaded question....as there are many choices that will all give you a nice finish. If it is an antique, then a shellac is probably the best choice, there are MANY types and grades, but Garnet will give you a great color on just about anything, but it will not stand up as well as varnish, which is also an excellent choice. Not Polyurethane, but a traditional Alkyd or tung oil type varnish. Both will impart that beautiful ambered, clear look with proper aplication and finishing. I assume you mean Poplar wood....but this is not a common wood for antique furniture, and is rarely golden at all, but usually whitish, sometimes with streaks of greens and browns and even purples, ....are you sure it's Poplar? If you'd email a photo or two I could help you identify it....but it was almost always used as a secondary wood on antiques....meaning drawer parts, bottoms, etc., as it's grain is unexciting and it finishes and wears poorly when compared to cherry, walnut, mahagony, oak, and other common species.
