In Response To: Re: crotch mahogany veneeservation (James Schooley)

James last suggestions are often overlooked....Sun will turn the beautiful red-brown mahagony a sickening yellow color...that can only be restored by stripping the finish and treating the wood, which obviously is very undesirable in an Antique....and seasonal dryness from forced hot air heat, baseboard units, etc., can wreck a veneered or solid wood piece of furniture....people rarely monitor the humidity in their homes, and their furniture is not the only thing that will suffer. A hygrometer can be found in most good hardware stores, is a small expense, and will allow you to monitor the humidity in a given space. Relative humidity should be maintained around 25%-30% ideally by adding humidity via humidifiers or furnace humidifying units...but most houses in winter can be way below that, and major damage can happen to a piece of furniture,as well as other objets d'art. Proper humidification can also help with dry skin, allergy symptoms in the home and even snoring...
