No poly will help an antique with the original finish, it's like painting a Gold ring gold. The veneer has dried out all that it likely is going to. You can fill the spaces in the face with a matching color of wax fill stick and then use a good tolulene free paste wax. Clean first with lemon oil if needed, and I trust the glue is holding fine. This is all you will need to do for now. Oh yes, avoid direct sun light, or very dry air.
