Thanks very much to all of you for all this input. The finish was very tough to remove. I used >6 applications in the end together with lacquer thinner rubbed in with wire wool after each application. Finally with subsequent aggressive sanding I had the job done. With the surface clean, the application of staining and french polishing was a dream. Many thanks again!
