You don't need to add anything, shellac is hard enough. There are a couple of sites that show a 'pencil hardness test' but I find it useless as it is not a scientific test by any stretch and, it is a one pound cut of unknown origin.
Shellac has been used for 4000 years.

Floor polish polymer hardnesses greater than 12 KHN signifies excellent resistance to wear. An all-acrylic polymer, RHOPLEX B-924, for example, which has outstanding wear properties, has a hardness of approximately 15 KHN. For comparison, acrylic plastic sheet has a hardness of 22 KHN; shellac has a hardness of 13-15 KHN, and that of carnauba wax is 7 KHN.
