A photo would be needed to tell much about the trunks. As for the cleaning, I start with a mild soap in warm water to wash off the dirt and wipe dry right away. Then I would use a paint thinner and soft cotton rag to remove any oil and wax that may be on the surface. A polish like Bristol Cream, or an automotive rubbing polish could be used to shine a little and to gradually loosen the outer layer of finish that has degraded, for a clearer view of the wood. This is a personal choice and would not be good on the lettering you mentioned. A tolulene free paste wax to shine and protect would be a good idea to complete the job. Some additional trunk advice can be viewed at my furnitureissues.com site.
