I'm assuming James, that you aren't making fun of me. Strange as it may seem that might be an option if it is bad enough and rustic enough. Done in bright sun the wood dries really fast and won't do any damage. I of course would probably use just a garden hose. I've ner done this but I have an old oak office chair in my shop I am doing for myself and I may just hose it down muself. Its that dirty.
As far as the choice of rags goes - I don't use cloth rags. I rely on paper towels because they are cheap and I buy them by the 12 pack. I was however a mechanic for years and we used paper shop rags. A roll costs about $1.77 and you get 50 to a roll. They work every bit as good as cloth. Better considering you can just pitch them when they get nasty.
