I prefer rags when hard cleaning is involved..one old t-shirt cut into 5-6 rags will clean as much as 2 rolls of paper toweling...and stand up a lot better to serious rubbing which is what you'll need to do. I also stay away from using any water solutions on wood with any thin/or no old finishes on it....I would just use a white ScotchBrite pad and a bowl of Mineral spirits or Turps, and work in small sections drying thoroughly as you go...this will not raise the grain in the least or do any bleaching of the surface..when you've covered the whole piece go over it one more time with a clean rag dampened with the solvent again...and then dry vigorously and let dry thoroughly...then you can evaluate what you have.......or we can help you do that...A good source of free rags is the local Salvation Army bin or GoodWill...a lot of people donate clothes that are tattered and not fit for reselling..I also love old toweling..hand/kitchen towels and old bath towels...during the spring I go to tag sales and find them for a quarter a piece or less...and tear them up into 12-14" squares.....great fro cleaning, stripping, etc...
