Cleaning years of dirt

I recently purchased a table and 2 benches that have sat in a barn for years. These are rustic pieces and I don't believe there was ever any finish on them. How do I clean off this dirt? It seems that a wet rag would just smear the dirt. I appreciate any input. Thanks. A Cassell
