ANTIQUE FURNITURE RESTORATION DISCUSSION BOARD

I have a fairly modern chest of drawers in a poor condition and I want to match the finish to two others I have in good condition. Unfortunately the old finish won't come off with paint stripper and aggressive sanding has left it patchy. I'm looking for a dark stain/finish that will cover the bare wood and unremoved old finish, but the stains I have used are too thin to do so successfully. Any ideas welcome!
