The original finish was probably a varnish of some type. Most likely common brown varnish. Shellac will fluoresce orange under a black light if you get curious to check but I doubt it was used originally.
Using a spar or urethane varnish is probably a good idea for heavy use in the future. Remember to use sonething that will be easy to recoat later as it will get some damage.
