1880s Irish Bar Posted By: Mark Southard (pool-68-238-179-68.phil.east.verizon.net) Date: 2/15/5 23:23
I am restoring an 1880s vintage "Irish bar" in Bethlehem, PA. The back bar is quartersawn oak and finished in an amber "shellacish" finish. It was restored by the previous owner who did a wonderful job on it. I don't know for sure if the treatment is shellac, but it seems to be.
My question is that I have now taken off the faux wood formica which covered the original bar serving surface and would like to refinish it with as close to original as possible. The wood under the formica seems to be mahogany. Any suggestions as to what the likely original finishing material would have been?
Thanks for any help you can offer.
