In Response To: Bri-Wax for Old Kitchen Cabinets (Dawn)

Dawn, Bri-wax will not by itself restore your cabinets. Wax is a preservative. I would suggest you clean them thoroughly with TSP (trisodium phosphate, available at home centers in the paint dept. TSP is great for removing grease. Also, Minwax makes a pretty good wood cleaner but the only place I have found it is at Sears. If there is a big buildup of grease in places you may have to clean that first with mineral spirits or paint thinner, then use the TSP or wood cleaner. When it all dries go ahead and put in the wax. As long as the finish isn't cracked from a lousy refinish job it should make your cupboards look much better. Remember though that furniture wax is not all that easy to buff out once it has dried, so you might consider using a buffer of some sort. Failing that, it can be buffed out nicely with 0000 steel wool. That will leave you with a nice satin sheen. I use steel wool to buff out customer furniture when I have used satin finish on it.
PS This is exactly the place to ask your questions. Any question concerning wood can most likely be answered here.
