if you're going to use paint make it a marine/boat paint to have the best resilience to water and moisture. you may consider using a stain covered with a heavy boat varnish too.
i wouldn't mess with a household paint unless you're dealing with a very dry /kiln dried shelving wood with a great primer and a paint, sand, paint, sand, paint technique. even then expecting more than a few years of looking good is all i would give it.
