It's hard to say about the value being harmed. It all depends on how bad the finish already is. Unless a piece is close to one hundred years old and made by a highly collected maker, it won't ruin it for all time. Clean it with lemon oil and wax the finish, if it looks pretty good, that should be fine and fairly a safe bet.
