I am restoring a platform rocker. It has a broken spring. It was made for Biltwell Furniture by Portland Furniture Manufacturing Co. in Portand Oregon. Probably made some time in the 1950s. The spring is a .25" thick metal guage that makes a square pattern and supports the whole chair. Its attached to a wood brace running across the bottom of the chair. Its different from other platform rockers in that, the chair itself is wider than the platform and appears to be totally supported by the spring and wood cross beam, not the rounded rocker parts of the chair and platform. So I have two questions. 1) Will it work to weld the old spring? 2) Will it work if I buy the new kind of coil springs that just attach the platform to the chair at the sides. This would mean that I would have to add wood to the inside to be able to have a mounting surface that is flush with the platform.
