The thing to watch out for is too long of ab exposure to plated items, it can eat the thinner plating right off. An industrial stregnth amonia will knock you right off your feet so wear tight fitting googles and a mask if you decide to try the pure stuff. I use chemmicaly pure amonia, but am used to it and never allow the fumes to escape for more than a few seconds. You can place it right outside a window and open and lower it as needed, if you have a lot of brass to do. The rate of darkening will depend on the mrass item the pureness of the amonia and how long it has had to evaporate, or weaken.
