Use orange sticks and dental picks along with old tooth brushes and flux brushes to work a solvent like lacquer thinner, or denatured alcohol to soften, pick and scrub out the remaining paint.

Visit the local library for some books on the style, if the item seems to be a hand made piece you may need to visit the local historical society for names and dates based on the methods used to create your item.
