You guys seem really knowledgeable, and I'm new at this, so I'm grateful for any advice you might have.
I'm trying to restore an unusual antique chair. It is a narrow, armless chair with delicate carving and small rollers on the front two legs. The seat is comprised of funky old coil springs secured with rope, then covered with a crumbling foam type pad and old floral pattern chinz-like fabric, then velvet.
The wood was thickly coated with lots of shiny white paint, most of which I've managed to remove with Jasco. There are a few white flecks of paint stuck in the fine carving, which I'm having trouble removing.
The wood is very dry and a bit splintery. Someone told me that it had an old "tar finish". I would like to restore the chair to as much of its original beauty as possible.
Any thoughts on what should come next? Something to clean the wood? Maybe something to moisturize the wood? I have linseed oil, Old English lemon oil, Scott's Liquid Gold wood cleaner & preservative,PowerHouse furniture polish with lemon oil, various car and floor waxes at hand as well as scary chemicals like paint thinner etc.
I appreciate your advice; having come this far, I hate to goof it up!
Many thanks, Elizabeth
