Cleaning a gold desso frame

I am trying to clean a decorative desso frame that has either gold guilt or Judsons gold on it. It is very dusty and grimy and I tried to wash with soapy water and a soft cloth. This however has taken some of the gold away also. Is there another solution (household / specialist) that I could use instead to clean it that would not damage the gold? Thanks.
