Many people describe old finish as being varnish, but shellac was used on almost all pre WWII furniture, since varnish takes six or more hours to dry and takes on dust for about two hours after aplication. Varnish was used on boats and lawn furniture since it is water proof, coating varnish with lacquer will cause it to wrinkle up or varigate.
