What kind of finish is on new Chinese furniture?

I hate to admit it, but I'm having so much trouble with my mahogany table top. I saw a gorgeous table top, it's larger, and only $40! It's got a gorgeous design of cherry and mahogany inlay. They will change out the legs for me. There are a few small scratches on the side, and a big long mark on the top, which seems to be sitting on top of the finish, and I was able to scrape a bit of it off with my fingernail. It was made in China and is new. What kind of finish is on it? The owner said his wife was able to touch up scratches with stain. I'm wondering if it will be worth it, and if I will be able to buff out the mark with compound or 0000 steel wool or lemon oil or mineral spirits. Would I maintain it with lemon oil? If I ever want to refinish it, and it is lacquer or polyurethane, will citrus stripper take off the finish? I cannot work with lacquer thinner, it makes me faint even using it outside. Thanks all.
