Sherry, if it was somebody's great grandmother's and it has brass on the feet, it's probably at least 50 years old. Sounds like a great set. Are the chairs sturdy? If it is an original finish, it's probably varnish that can be restored if it was treated well during its lifetime, like, being polished occasionally. What kind of shape is it in? Why do you want to refinish? I had a table like that, brass polish cleaned up the feet. There are lots of tips in here about restoring. Cleaning with Murphy's oil soap (damp not soaking) and a good drink of lemon oil might be a good start. Small scratches can be touched up with Minwax red mahogany stain, use an artist brush.
