You can darken brass with amonia, such as household cleaner. Once the finish if any has been removed from the metal. Amonia can be applied directly with a brush or rag or the fumes can darken the brass more slowely by use of a humidor effect. I use an uverturned aquarium to do this and can remove items as they achieve the color I want leaving the others in a while longer till they all match. As for the degree of sheen, you can buff out the heavy gloss with 0000 steel wool or a scotch bright (white) pad. I prefer dark drown briwax to enhanse the patina and darken light areas over shellac.
