Antique finish

I'm new to antique finishes, does anyone know what the dark finish is on antique furniture, that cracks after all the years? I have a dresser and wash stand that belonged to my grandmother. The finish is almost black, very thick and when stripper is applied to it, it gets very gummy. She had scraped all of the finish off the dresser, and I would like to try to put it back like it was. Can you still get this kind of finish? Thanks for any help.
