stained pattern on veneer

I have a bedroom set from the 1940s that is alligatoring, so I tried to remove the finish with lacquer thinner and alcohol. The center of the drawer appears to be veneer with a burl pattern, and on each side is a striped veneer in a V pattern. When I removed the finish I discovered the pattern is actually 'painted' on with stain, and I've ruined one of the drawers. Is anyone familiar with this method of staining? And do you know how I can restore the finish on the remaining drawers without damaging the pattern in the stain?
