replace desktop veneer

I have a 1954 vintage walnut veneer office desk mfg. by Jasper Office Furniture Co., Jasper, IN. It is a typical two pedestal desk with a 30x60 top. The original top must have been damaged - it has been replaced by a simulated walnut "veneer". This top has de-laminated and I want to replace it. I am wondering what would be correct for a desk like this. Should I use a quality walnut veneer, or something else. This is a pretty utilitarian desk so leather doesn't seem appropriate. Did desks of this period often us some other synthetic surface? Appreciate your thoughts on this and sources for walnut veneer or other surface materials. BTW, I will use in my home office so it will not get any heavy use or abuse.
