From your descripion it sounds as though you bed may be from the mid to late 1800's. It has many slats because it was designed to hold a mattress filled with shucks or feathers with no springs under it. The style sounds like what is generally referred to as a cannon ball bed. The wood could be almos any specie as these beds were made locally out of what ever was available.
