I purchased a 1947 Lane cedar chest at an estate sale. Someone has painted an "antique" finish on the outside like they used to do in the 70's. When looking on the inside of the trunk's edge I can see no veneer layer where I should. It's the waterfall/cascade style. Can I assume there's a veneer under the paint, even though I can't see it, or did Lane ever make a solid cedar chest in this style? I'm not sure how approach the stripping, sanding, the inside and back are in pristine condition.

I could also use some advice on what type of finish to use, hand rubbed, tung oil or whatever. Thanks!
