ANTIQUE FURNITURE RESTORATION DISCUSSION BOARD

slate hearth

I have restored a black slate fire surround and will be putting in a victorain insert. However, I need to put down a new hearth, but would prefer to have a slate hearth that does not appear new and shiny. I will also not be able to remove the surround to fit the inset and hearth, and therefore will have to have the hearth cut to fit. I have had a quote for a piece of slate to be cut, but it is both very pricey and the slate is highly polished. I have heared that some people use slate tiles? Any one have any ideas? Thanks in advance.
