Lemon oil is a safe way to remove old wax and dirt build up from an antique. A coft cotton rag would be beat for loosening the dirt, wipe off the residue with a paper towel, as the paper towel shows less darkening, the surface will be more dirt free. Allow to dry for a few hours and then use a tolulene free paste wax, from your local refinisher or a quality antique dealer. I use briwax and have great results.
