Surface tension is a function of the molecular weight; personally I am not much in the "brushing shellac" camp. I use cotton wadding ("fadding" in Britain) to avoid the streaking and ridging when first applying shellac. Like any craft process, there is a lot to shellac finishing in the deatils but it becomes straightforward and predictable when you do it enough - "practice makes perfect".
